Meet Devin McCoy: Railz's Sr. Front End Developer
Railz is always hiring amazing people to join our fast-scaling fintech team. Today, meet Devin McCoy, a Senior Front End Developer at Railz!
Devin McCoy is a Senior Front End Developer at Railz. Devin made the change into software development at 26 years old when he left construction to go to school for software engineering. He always had a love of building things and states that software development is just another way to do it!
Railz: Tell us about your career so far, Devin. How did you get to where you are today?
Devin McCoy: My first scripting experience was when my brother and I ran an Ultima Online private server. I was around 10 years old or so. I would just open up files in notepad and find the values I wanted to change. This resulted in me breaking stuff quite a bit and having to learn how to fix what I broke.
My first software development job was when I was still in college and I joined a startup as their only developer. We worked directly out of the founders' apartment. After that, I joined another startup that facilitated companies to create and build their own chatbot with a nice drag and drop interface.
How did you end up in the tech and startup world?
I’ve always enjoyed working in smaller companies. In a startup, there’s very little red tape and you own your project from start to finish. I also like establishing patterns and taking on tasks that I haven’t had experience with in the past. Startups provide all of these things and is typically paired with a talented team of highly motivated people that you can learn and grow with.
What’s a day in the life of a front end developer like?
Each day usually has something a bit different as a front end developer. I generally start my day with code reviews and establishing an order of what I need to accomplish for that day to meet my goals for the sprint. We will begin the day with a standup meeting to make sure everyone has everything they need to succeed and that there are no blockers to performing the tasks. I will try to carve out a good 4-6 hours of heads down time to focus on my tasks for that day and listen to podcasts (Last Podcast on the Left or Turned out a Punk are my go-tos!).
What inspired you to pursue software development?
I worked as a machinist and in construction when I was younger. I always enjoyed working with my hands and being able to stand back at the end of the day to look at what I had built and accomplished. You can get that same feeling from software development. I still get to build things but I just don’t use a hammer as often.
Talk about your preferred tech stack and software tools you can’t live without as a developer:
For front end development the tech stack doesn’t matter to me too much at this point (as long as it’s not Angular). For backend development I would probably choose Python or TypeScript as my languages that I like to work in. For software tools, I could not live without Guake, Visual Studio Code, and Postman.
What has been your favourite thing about working at Railz?
I’ve gotten to build several apps from the ground up including Railz Connect™ and Railz Sites™. Those were both very fun for me since I got a clean slate and the ability to choose the tech stack that I felt was the best fit for the job. I feel like everyone I work with has a lot to offer and is open to teaching or learning. Railz is a great environment to grow.
Do you have any advice for someone interested in joining fintech, a startup, or Railz?
It's important to remember that fintech is relatively new to most people and you may feel like you don't have the right experience to join this industry. It's totally normal and really common in fintech to feel like a fish out of water. My advice is to keep learning. Remember that any mistake is as a chance to learn something new!
